본 연구는 반려동물 양육이 사회자본 형성에 미치는 영향을 실증적으로 검증하고, 연령대별 이질적 효과를 규명하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 1인 가구 증가와 고령화로 전통적 공동체 기반이 약화되는 상황에서, 반려동물이 새로운 사회적 연결망의 매개체로 기능할 수 있는지를 탐구하였다. 2024년 서울서베이 데이터를 활용하여 사회자본을 Putnam(2000)의 이론적 틀에 따라 인지적 차원과 구조적 차원으로 분리하고, 순서형 로짓모형과 조절효과 분석을 수행하였다. 분석 결과, 반려동물 양육은 구조적 사회자본에 일관되게 정의 영향을 미친 반면, 인지적 사회자본에 대한 효과는 연령대별로 상이하게 나타났다. 본 연구는 Wood et al.(2005, 2015, 2017)의 '사회적 윤활제' 가설을 고밀도 주거환경을 특징으로 하는 한국의 초대도시 서울의 맥락으로 확장하고, 사회자본의 차원별 비대칭적 효과를 실증함으로써 이론적으로 기여하였다. 정책적으로는 반려동물을 사회적 자본 인프라로 재개념화하고, 청년층 대상 경제적 지원과 장년층 대상 사회참여 프로그램을 차별화하는 세대별 맞춤형 정책 설계의 필요성을 제시하였다.

This study empirically examines the effect of pet ownership on the formation of social capital, with a particular focus on generational heterogeneity. Amid the weakening of traditional community ties due to the rise of single-person households and population aging, the research explores whether companion animals can serve as new mediators of social connectedness in a megacity context. Using data from the 2024 Seoul Survey, social capital was divided into cognitive and structural dimensions based on Putnam’s (2000) theoretical framework. Ordered logistic regression and moderation analyses were conducted to assess differential effects across age groups. The findings reveal that pet ownership consistently exerts a positive influence on structural social capital, while its effect on cognitive social capital varies significantly by generation. Theoretically, this study extends Wood et al.’s (2005, 2015, 2017) “social lubricant” hypothesis to the East Asian megacity context and provides empirical evidence for the asymmetric effects of different dimensions of social capital. Policy implications suggest reconceptualizing companion animals as part of the social capital infrastructure and developing generation-specific policies—such as economic support programs for younger cohorts and community participation initiatives for older adults—to strengthen urban social cohesion.
