대학원대학은 석·박사과정만 운영하는 고등교육기관으로, 학령인구 감소와 대학원 진학률 정체로 인해 구조적 위기에 직면하고 있다.
본 연구는 「대학원대학의 재정건전성과 교육여건을 분석하고, 이를 토대로 구조조정 필요성을 검토하였다. 대학알리미에 공시된 40개(또는 39개) 대학원대학(사립)을 대상으로, 대학알리미와 한국사학진흥재단 공시정보, 결산서 및 감사보고서를 활용하였다.
주요 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 연구비 수혜 및 논문 실적도 미미하여, 연구중심 교육기관으로서의 기능을 충분히 수행하지 못하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 모의 재정진단에서 약 18%의 대학이 경영위기대학으로 분류되었다.
본 연구에서는 대학원대학의 교육 질 제고를 위한 기관평가인증의 의무화, 재정진단 결과와 정부 지원사업의 연계 강화, 회계·행정감사 체계의 개선 및 투명성 제고 등 정책 제안을 제시하였다. 본 연구는 대학원대학의 구조조정의 필요성과 관련한 기초자료와 근거를 제공했다는 점에서 공헌이 있다.


Graduate schools are institutions of higher education that offer only master's and doctoral programs, and are facing a structural crisis due to a declining school-age population and stagnant graduate school enrollment rates.
This study analyzed the financial soundness and educational conditions of graduate schools and proposed restructuring directions based on these findings. The study targeted 40 (or 39) private graduate schools listed on the University Information Service (University Information Service), utilizing publicly disclosed information, financial statements, and audit reports from the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Private Schools (KFS).
Key research findings include the following. First, research funding and publication performance were minimal, indicating that universities were unable to fully fulfill their role as research-oriented educational institutions. Second, a simulated financial diagnosis classified approximately 18% of universities as being in financial crisis.
This study presents policy recommendations to enhance the quality of education at graduate schools, including mandatory institutional evaluation and accreditation, strengthening the link between financial assessment results and government support programs, and improving accounting and administrative audit systems and enhancing transparency. This study contributes by providing basic data and evidence regarding the need for restructuring graduate schools.
