본 연구에서는 기존의 이데올로기적 접근과 퍼포먼스 이론으로 촛불집회의 성격과 과정, 그리고 결과를 비교, 분석하였다. 퍼포먼스 이론이라는 새로운 분석을 통해 한국사회 내에서 최근 발생하고 있는 각종 정치적ㆍ사회적 현상을 설명하고, 대중의 의사소통과 자기표현의 발현에 따라 기존 정치가 근본적으로 변화할 수 있다는 점을 논의하였다. 결론적으로 전통적인 정치이데올로기의 관점으로는 촛불집회를 설명하는데 많은 한계가 있었고, 퍼포먼스 이론의 접근으로는 정치 이데올로기 관점의 한계를 넘어 촛불집회의 새로운 면을 해석할 수 있었다.
2008년 촛불집회를 통해 가장 두드러진 것은 기성 엘리트에 의해 통제되지 않는 대중의 힘이 사회전면에 부상한 것이다. 2008년 촛불집회는, 어느 국가든 네트워크사회를 맞이하여 수직적 사회구조는 다원주의적인 수평적 구조로 전환되고 있다는 점을 보여준다는 점에는 사회정치적 의미가 크다고 하겠다. 퍼포먼스 이론의 시각에서 살펴볼 때, 참여대중의 촛불집회라는 퍼포먼스는, 참여대중이 사회적으로 정치엘리트만이 독점하고 있던 정치무대를 수동적으로 바라보고 있던 관객의 입장에서 벗어나 적극적으로 무대 위로 올라와 자신의 퍼포먼스를 수행한 것으로 해석할 수 있다. 이는 참여대중이 이제는 더 이상 수동적으로 정치라는 상품과 서비스의 소비자임을 거부하고, 능동적으로 정치상품과 서비스의 공급자로서의 역할을 한 것이라고 설명할 수 있다.
